We can facet gemstones to your specifications using your rough materials or ours. If you do not have a design in mind, we will work
with you to give you viable choices that will maximize the four C’s; Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat weight. We offer two design services
– Standard and Custom. The difference between standard and custom facet design is the degree of difficulty; which is usually
associated with the complexity of the faceting design; e.g., the number of facets. Whichever design you choose, you can be
assured that the polish will be superb, the facets distinct, and the critical angles are correct for the given material.
All custom cuts are designed on GemCad (a computer-aided design program developed by Robert Strickland) which allows us to proof cut the rough
prior to actually faceting the gemstone. GemCad takes into account symmetry (length to width ratios), critical angles
(based on refractive index) and can follow paths of light rays through the stone which allows us to optimize a design to minimize light
loss. Other designs are available from renowned faceter’s Jeff Graham, Doug Turet, and Long & Steele.
The following service fees are based on finished gemstone weight and type of material. Standard types of materials include the
quartz varieties, garnets, tourmalines, topaz, beryls, feldspars, and most minerals between six and eight on the Moh’s hardness scale.
There are additional charges for extra-soft, extra-hard, or easily cleaved, fragile, or heat-sensitive stones. For other lapidary
services see the Cabochon and Restorative pages.

Commercial cutting services are available as well. Costs are generally $4.00 each for less than one carat and $4.00 per carat for greater than one carat per finished carat weight plus shipping and handling. All pre-forming is done on site, in an effort to maximize yield prior to shipment overseas. We offer this service as an alternative to faceting, cabbing, or carving rough material that would not yield the economic benefit garnered from custom (native) lapidary services. Contact us for further information.
Yields: The material loss from taking a piece of rough, to a pre-form, and finally to a faceted gemstone can be significant. This is where orientation and shape come in. On average, the percent of return is usually 25 - 35 %. That is a loss of 65 - 75 % of the original material. Commercial cutting averages a 15% yield from your rough. Quality custom cutting typically offers at least a 25 to 35% better yield. Compared with commercial cutting, quality custom cutting usually adds at least 25% to the value of the gemstone.
